Disorder of Consciousness Program
Disorder of Consciousness (DOC) program is offered to patients with a severe brain injury who have difficulty ‘waking up” following injury. In some cases, this impairment in alertness is prolonged. The diagnosis of a disorder of consciousness is complex, and cannot be completely accurate based on one assessment. Because many of these patients will fluctuate in their alertness from day to day, as well as different times during the day. It is important that patients with DOC generally receive the appropriate assessments over time. The physicians, nurses, and therapists at New Summit Rehabilitation and Healthcare are experienced in taking care of individuals with DOC and understand the complex needs of these patients. You can feel confident in the care of your loved one.
Brain injury afterwards affects each patient differently; no two cases are the same. Patients that are diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury, assessed as being in a “minimally conscious” or “vegetative” state, and are clinically stable enough to potentially benefit from intensive rehabilitation care will be considered for the Disorder of Consciousness Program as a result.
Goals of the program
- Determine the patient’s precise level of consciousness and responsiveness
- Advise on medical stability for continued care
- Optimize his or her medication regimen
