Neurotrauma/
Catastrophic Rehabilitation

Neurotrauma Catastrophic Trauma Rehabilitation what is it? It is trauma thatcan strike at any time, and injury to the central nervous system and suddenly result in life-altering changes in a person’s ability to perform the most basic of functions.  In the United States each year, between 2 to 5 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury with almost 300,000 being injured severely enough to be hospitalized.  Approximately 18,000 new spinal cord injuries occur in the United States each year.  Many of these injuries occur to people in the prime of life, between the ages of 18 to 40.  In these cases, it is important to receive care in a setting that has the expertise to understand the nuances of these injuries. Furthermore to provide the best chance for the most improvement in functional abilities.  Unfortunately, the criteria for care in an inpatient rehabilitation facility is rigid and narrow. This limits the ability of many patients to access this level of care.

A new model for rehabilitation services

Our program is designed to provide the same type of care typically provided in inpatient rehabilitation. Without many of the limitations that the insurance industry has placed on those settings.  We work closely with rehabilitation partners to transition to the next level of care when appropriate.  Many patients will go to inpatient rehabilitation when it is appropriate.  Our team will work with you to determine the appropriate timing. Our staff will guide inpatient rehabilitation and facilitate a smooth hand off.

THE NEW SUMMIT APPROACH

Moreover the New Summit approach provides a comprehensive assessment of the patient’s condition. In an interdisciplinary team approach, with the development of an individualized treatment program.  This approach allows for a more accurate prognosis for the individual. As a result, more specific, appropriate rehabilitation plan.

ESTABLISHING TREATMENT GOALS

Markedly everyone’s individual interests, goals, and dreams are unique.  Whenever possible, our team wants to establish goals for outcomes that are the patient’s goals.

Family Involvement

Research has shown that individuals with neurotrauma who have involved family have better functional outcomes.  In many cases, the family is the surrogate decision-maker for the individual. It is the only resource for information about what the injured individuals’ likes, dislikes, goals, or wishes would be.  At New Summit Rehabilitation and Healthcare, we believe that family involvement in the rehabilitation process is critical for the patient’s best recovery.

INTEGRATION WITH OTHER CARE PROVIDERS

Overall New Summit Rehabilitation and Healthcare understands that the care required for the adequate rehabilitation of individuals with Catastrophic injury necessarily involves treatment at multiple facilities.  We work with many other partners in the rehabilitation field, and can provide a smooth seamless transition when the time comes for transition to the next level of care, if necessary. Above all our professionals from other organizations are able to participate in our interdisciplinary team conference to assure a proper hand off.
